WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR


POSITION SUMMARY
Maggie Valley Sanitary District is seeking a dependable Water Operator to join our Water
Operations team. This position is responsible for the safe and reliable operation, maintenance, and
monitoring of the District's surface water treatment plant and water distribution system.
The successful candidate must have strong technical skills, a commitment to public health and
water quality, and the ability to work independently while supporting the District's water
operations team.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
North Carolina Surface Water Treatment Facility Operator Certification (or willingness to
obtain within one year of hire), OR
North Carolina Distribution Operator Certification (or willingness to obtain within one year
of hire), AND,
Valid North Carolina driver's license
High school diploma or GED.
Experience in public water treatment and/or distribution system operations.
Ability to maintain required certifications and continuing education.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Additional certifications and experience are desirable, including:
North Carolina A or B-Surface Water Treatment Facility Operator Certification.
North Carolina A or B -Distribution Operator Certification.
North Carolina Well Water Treatment Facility Operator Certification.
Cross-Connection/Backflow certification.
Experience operating a surface water treatment plant and distribution system.
Experience with pumps, filtration, disinfection, chemical feed systems, SCADA, and
water-system maintenance.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate and monitor the surface water treatment plant, including pumps, filters, chemical
feed systems, disinfection equipment, tanks, valves, and related equipment.
Monitor and document water quality, turbidity, disinfectant residuals, flows, pressures, and
other required operating parameters.
Perform required water-quality sampling, testing, and operational recordkeeping.
Operate and maintain the distribution system, including water mains, valves, hydrants,
meters, tanks, pump stations, and service connections.
Perform routine inspections, flushing, valve exercising, leak detection, preventive
maintenance, and system repairs.
Respond to water-main breaks, equipment failures, water-quality concerns, alarms, power
outages, and other emergencies.
Troubleshoot equipment and report maintenance or operational concerns promptly.
Safely handle treatment chemicals and operate District vehicles, equipment, and tools.
Follow applicable NCDEQ, OSHA, and District safety and operating requirements.
Participate in on-call, weekend, holiday, and emergency response duties as required.
Maintain a clean, safe, and professional work environment.
Perform other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of surface water treatment and water distribution system operations.
Ability to recognize abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate corrective action.
Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot water-system equipment.
Ability to read gauges, meters, SCADA displays, maps, diagrams, and equipment manuals.
Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with supervisors and
coworkers.
Ability to work independently and safely in varying weather conditions.
Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and changing operational needs.


WORK SCHEDULE & CONDITIONS
The position is for swing shift and will require early morning, evening, weekend, holiday,
overtime, and emergency call-out work based upon District operational needs.
Work includes indoor and outdoor activities, physical labor, equipment operation, exposure to
varying weather conditions, and working around treatment chemicals, machinery, electrical
equipment, and other water-system hazards.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary: Based on experience and certifications: $42,754 - $68,210
Benefits: Includes health insurance (medical, dental and vision), state retirement, 401K match,
and paid leave.
